Fetal Scalp pH Testing

Fetal scalp pH testing is done to find out if a baby is getting sufficient oxygen during labor. With a woman's cervix dilated, a plastic cone is inserted in the vagina against the scalp of the fetus. A small blood sample from the baby's scalp is obtained. The sample is analyzed in the hospital or by an apparatus in the labor and delivery department. The results will show if the baby is getting enough oxygen. The results may show that a cesarean section or forceps delivery is necessary rather than a traditional delivery.
