Interventional Imaging Procedures

With the increased availability of high quality imaging equipment and the improved ability to see inside the body, radiologists have been able to apply their medical expertise in reading CT scans, X-rays, ultrasounds and other diagnostic tests to diagnose and treat conditions without traditional surgery. Called interventional radiology, these procedures are conducted by physicians with special training and have become state-of-the art, commonplace treatments. Interventional radiologists are board-certified radiologists who are fellowship trained in percutaneous interventions using guided imaging. Their specialized training is certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Interventional radiology offers a number of advantages over surgery: most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis or require only a short hospital stay; general anesthesia is usually not required; and risk, pain and recovery time are less than traditional surgery.
