Intersphincteric Resection

Intersphincteric Resection

An intersphincteric resection is for tumors close to the anal opening. It restores the sphincter after rectal surgery. Rectum tumors are usually treated with amputation of the rectum requiring the permanent use of a colostomy bag. By comparison, an intersphincteric resection saves the sphincter and rectum and does not require using a permanent colostomy bag. This is a robotic surgery.
