Rigid Proctoscopy

A rigid proctoscopy examines the rectum or colon. It is used in the analysis of lower gastrointestinal(GI) problems including lower GI bleeding, change in bowel movements, colitis of the rectum or descending colon. The proctoscope, inserted through the anus, is lubricated and usually uses a light source attached to it. A digital rectal examination precedes a rigid proctoscopy to determine if there are any obstructions prior to insertion of the proctoscope.
