Esophageal Manometry

Esophageal manometry evaluates how effective the esophagus is functioning. In an esophageal manometry, swallowing tests are conducted. A thin tube is inserted through the nose and down into the esophagus and stomach. The tube measures pressure of muscle contractions while an individual swallows. The test can evaluate swallowing problems and is done when an individual has heartburn or nausea or shows signs of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
