Poisoning can occur by swallowing or breathing poisons or by skin or eye contact with poisons. According to the National Capital Poison Center, the most common poisons are:

  • Cosmetics and personal care products
  • Cleaning substances
  • Pain medicine/fever-reducers
  • Coins and thermometers
  • Plants
  • Diaper care, acne preparations, antiseptics
  • Cough and cold preparations
  • Pesticides
  • Vitamins
  • Gastrointestinal preparations
  • Antimicrobials
  • Arts, crafts and office supplies
  • Antihistamines
  • Hormones and hormone antagonists (diabetes medications, contraceptives)
  • Hydrocarbons (lamp oil, kerosene, gasoline, lighter fluid)

If poisoning occurs, call the Florida poison information center at (800) 222-1222. If the person who was poisoned struggles to breathe, has seizures or won’t wake up, call 911.
