Concussion Signs Symptoms and Treatment

Concussion Signs, Symptoms and Treatment

Playing sports increases self-esteem, teaches teamwork and can be a great stress reliever. However, playing sports can come with potential safety hazards. Half of all sports injuries can be prevented. Before signing up for any sports, children should have a physical to check for injuries or health conditions. Purchase the right kind of sports equipment and make sure that it fits properly to help avoid unnecessary injuries. Children should stay properly hydrated during and after games. If a child is injured, take them out of the game and assess the injury. Playing through an injury can cause further damage.

A concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head, face, neck or body. Concussions are not visible. These generally occur when children are playing sports. If a child has a concussion, they should be removed them from their activity and examined by a doctor. Florida Law states that any child suspected of suffering a concussion should refrain from game play. The child must have written consent to return to play.

Did Your Child Hit His or Her Head?

Some of the things that may suggest a child has a concussion are:

  • Clumsiness or balance issues
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Confusion
  • Slow or slurred speech

Parents should have their child examined by a medical professional immediately to help lower the risk of a second concussion. After a medical evaluation rules out any other brain injury and symptoms have subsided, children can walk through a series of steps called supervised step-wise return to play. The steps are as follows:

  1. No activity – rest until completely symptom free
  2. Light aerobic exercise
  3. Sport-specific training
  4. Non-contact drills
  5. Full-contact drills
  6. Game play
