Bedroom Allergens

If you have allergies, you may not be aware of the allergens that may lurk in your bedroom.

  • Dust mites live in bedding, upholstered furniture and carpeting.

  • Stuffed animals harbor dust mites, while some plastic and rubber toys can trigger contact dermatitis and other skin problems.

  • The dander of cats and dogs can stick to walls and fabrics.

Here are ways to keep these allergens under control: Encase pillows, mattresses and box springs in allergen-proof materials to limit mite exposure, and wash sheets at least once a week in hot water. Wash blankets regularly. Remove carpeting and upholstered furniture. Keep pets off the bed and out of the bedroom.
