Hospital Orientation
Going to the hospital can be an intimidating experience. Knowing what to expect before admission can help reduce stress & anxiety for children and their families. Therefore, we encourage children & families to participate in our Hospital Orientation Program. The orientation session is conducted by a Certified Child Life Specialist trained in child development.
Using a variety of teaching tools, a Child Life Specialist will explain what your child will directly experience during their hospitalization. Depending on your child's age and anxiety level, the Child Life Specialist may use pictures showing hospital rooms, medical staff, medical equipment, and teaching dolls to explain all aspects of their care. A tour of the hospital and surgical area is also included. This is a free service offered by the hospital and a fun way to prepare for surgery!
When is the Orientation Program Offered?
The Hospital Orientation Program is offered every Saturday from 10:00-11:00 AM. It is recommended for children ages 3-8 years and we suggest that your child attend the Saturday immediately prior to their scheduled surgery date. If your child is over the age of 8, an individual orientation session can be scheduled. All children must be registered in advance in order to participate in the program.
