Five Tips for Seniors Living Alone

Whether you are a senior living alone or the caretaker of a senior that is living alone, it is important to be prepared and have a well-rounded plan, which is why we put together these 5 tips that are sure to help caretakers or independent living seniors.

Routinely Checkup on Household Items

It’s important to make sure everything around your home is up and running. You should test your smoke alarms monthly. Remember to change your air filter every couple of months or consider having an AC maintenance plan so you don’t have to worry about it. If you have an emergency cell phone, make sure it is charged and working. If you don’t drive often, make sure to check your tire’s air pressure, the oil and take a drive around the block every once awhile to avoid damages that can occur to your car when it experiences long periods of inactivity. Calling in a handyman for some of these responsibilities or any others that involve physical activity is a great idea also.

Make Sure Your Home is Safe and Well Stocked

Preventative safety measures are worth the effort and will prove to be beneficial in the long run. Set up non-slip floor mats and install safety bars in the bathroom to avoid falls. Don’t leave cables or other obstacles in careless places for the same reason. If you live in an area where hurricanes occur or you just want to be safe in case of another disaster, make sure to stock up on bottled water, canned foods and household products, such as toilet paper, toothpaste and soap.

A home medical alert system can provide reassurance and a safe, stress-free environment. They can allow you to rest easy knowing if anything happens, you are one click away from help. Make Friends with Your Neighbors

Having a good relationship with your neighbors is always a great idea. If you ever need help in a pinch, they’re very close by. Also, there is a chance they spot trouble if an emergency arises at your home. Asking them to give you a heads up if an emergency were to occur in the neighborhood can also prove to be helpful.

Consider a Medicine Management System

A medication management system is a secure locking device that notifies you or your caretaker if a medicine dosage is missed. It never hurts to have a reminder just in case you forget, especially when it’s something as important as remembering to take your medication.
