Why Choose Us
The goal of our program is for trainees to develop a strong foundation of clinical skills, decision-making skills, and research for our trainees prior to progressing to their advanced specialty programs.
Our sponsoring program is the BayCare Internal Medicine Residency Program at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Our teaching sites include St. Joseph’s Hospital, St Joseph’s Hospital -North, and BayCare ambulatory clinics.
Transitional Year residents are provided with a comprehensive clinical experience that mirrors the training afforded to residents in BayCare’s categorical programs. Our residents’ schedules, duties, and didactics are consistent with that of categorical residents, which affords them the same teaching opportunities and supervision. Our program director works directly with each resident to ensure that all requirements are met to allow them to progress to their chosen field.

Program Faculty
Dr. Rahul Bhakta is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. Prior to joining BayCare, he worked as a hospitalist and as faculty for USF Health Department of Internal Medicine. During that time, Dr. Bhakta also served as the Vice-Chief of Hospital Medicine at Tampa General Hospital. In addition to working in hospitalist medicine, he also volunteers with local medical students at a student clinic to care for the underserved population of Tampa Bay. Dr. Bhakta has a genuine appreciation for the interdisciplinary approach to medicine and uses his experiences to educate trainees in the art of medicine and teamwork to best serve patients.
