LARIAT™ procedure is a minimally invasive procedure to reduce stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation. We will discuss the procedure with you in detail and answer any questions you may have.
LARIAT Procedure: Who is a Candidate?
One of the complications of atrial fibrillation is that it increases your risk of stroke. While there are medications, such as blood thinners, to reduce stroke risk, not every patient is a candidate for the medication. Our heart team uses the minimally invasive LARIAT procedure to reduce stroke risk in patients who cannot take blood thinning medications. Meet our team.
Minimally Invasive LARIAT Suture Delivery Device: What to Expect
We perform this procedure in one of our advanced procedures rooms, equipped with the most advanced imaging and surgical equipment. Learn more about our procedure rooms at the Heart Institute. During a LARIAT procedure we:
- Place you under general anesthesia.
- Insert two catheters. One carries a suture (stitching) device and one guides it into place.
- Guide the catheter to the left atrial appendage (LAA), the area of the heart where blood clots often form.
- Use the LARIAT Suture Delivery Device to tighten a stitch around the LAA, sealing it off from the rest of the heart.
- The stitch blocks the clots from traveling to the brain, which prevents them from causing a stroke.
