At the heart of the matter is our new STEMI program. Thanks to an upgrade and renovation to our cardiac cath lab, we’ve got a new process to quickly treat STEMIs, one of the most severe types of heart attack. The best way to deal with STEMIs is by performing a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) within 90 minutes of first receiving care from emergency medical personnel. Not all hospitals have this capability. But now Bartow Regional Medical Center does.

What is a STEMI?

“ST” Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) is a severe type of heart attack occurring when a completely blocked coronary artery causes a prolonged blockage of the blood supply to the heart. A STEMI must be treated quickly to avoid permanent heart damage. Time translates into muscle loss, so patients suffering a STEMI are taken to the closest hospital that can treat this type of heart attack. If you see the signs of a heart attack in yourself or someone else, you want to go to a hospital that has all the expertise and skills you need for emergency intervention.
