A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation is one that has demonstrated a firm commitment to offering its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease. Axelrod Pavilion

In a continuing effort to provide advanced medical technology and expanded cancer diagnostic and care services, the new, 103,500 square-foot, four-story Axelrod Pavilion is now open at Morton Plant Hospital. The Axelrod Pavilion is named for Shirley and Harvey Axelrod in recognition of Mrs. Axelrod's generous support of Morton Plant Mease Foundation.

Axelrod Pavilion is the new home of the following comprehensive services and centers:

  • Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center - provides patient-focused, expedited diagnostic breast imaging while focusing on each woman's physical and emotional needs.
  • Comprehensive Breast Care Center of Tampa Bay – an oncology physician center headed by surgical oncologists Dr. Peter Blumencranz and Dr. Kathleen Allen
  • Carlisle Imaging Center – provides a full range of imaging exams including diagnostic X-ray, MRI, PET/CT, ultrasound, and mammography.
  • Evelyn R. Simmers Oncology Resource Library – the location also offers a social worker navigator to help guide patients and their families through the cancer treatment process.
  • Cancer Patient Support Services (CaPSS) - provides cancer patients and their families access to counselors, support groups and education in effective coping skills.

In 2002, Morton Plant Hospital opened the first Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center, offering the most comprehensive breast health services in the Tampa Bay area. Today, the Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center is still the most comprehensive center in the area and has expanded into five locations throughout North Pinellas and Pasco counties.
