Low Dose CT Scan Checks Your Chest

Low-dose CT screening for lung cancer provides a detailed view of your chest and lungs. CT scans, or Computerized Tomography, is recognized as beneficial for high-risk patients who need to have their lungs and chest closely examined, but have been unable to endure anesthesia or risk surgery to get a look inside.

To understand how CT scans works, think about getting a look at the individual slices of bread in a loaf, without having to damage the wrapping. Once your doctor gets to see the individual slices, they can magnify certain sections as well as combine sections, change views and just basically get much more information than from ordinary x-rays.

CT Scan Eligibility

Physician criteria for patients interested in this procedure targets individuals between the ages of 55 and 77 (or up to 80 years old if you have managed care), who are current or former heavy smokers, who have a history of 30 pack years of smoking. A pack year is number of packs smoked per day multiplied by number of years smoked:

  • 1 pack per day for 30 years = 30 pack years
  • 2 packs per day for 15 years = 30 pack years

Additional criteria include:

  • Former smokers who have quit within the past fifteen years
  • Those interested in the CT Lung Screening will need to have a physician referral
  • If you do not have insurance, $99 is due at the time of service
