Causes and Symptoms of Erectile Dysfunction
BayCare strives to offer personalized, compassionate care to every patient and that includes catering to the unique needs of men. A relatively common condition that affects males is erectile dysfunction, or impotence. The occasional inability to maintain an erection is not cause for alarm. However, if it develops into a chronic issue and begins to affect your quality of life, consider discussing treatment options with your doctor.
Erectile dysfunction may have a variety of causes, since sexual arousal involves so many factors. Both psychological and physiological issues can inhibit your ability to get or maintain an erection. Depression, anxiety and stress can lead to this condition, as can heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and a variety of other health conditions. Symptoms include reduced sexual drive and difficulty getting and/or maintaining an erection.
Diagnosis & Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction can usually be diagnosed by your primary care physician with a simple physical exam. However, additional tests may be necessary if your doctor determines that an underlying health condition is contributing to your issue. Additional diagnostic tests may include urinalysis, blood tests or an ultrasound. BayCare has outpatient imaging centers and outpatient labs in convenient locations across Tampa Bay.
Oral medication is the most common treatment for erectile dysfunction, though injection therapy or testosterone replacement therapy may also be recommended. If nonsurgical options are ineffective, your doctor may suggest penile implants or some form of vascular surgery.
