Common Infections and Causes
Here are three of the most common types of urological infections and their causes:
- UTI – A urinary tract infection, or UTI, is an infection that can develop anywhere along the urinary tract due to bacteria. Most commonly the infection occurs in the lower urinary tract, the bladder and urethra. Women are typically at a greater risk of developing UTIs. Antibiotics are the usual treatment, but there are many ways to prevent the infection before it begins.
- Kidney Infection – A kidney infection, or pyelonephritis, is a specific type of urinary tract infection that involves the kidneys and ureters above the bladder and urethra. This infection is caused by the same bacteria that can cause a UTI and requires prompt medical attention. Once the infection is in the kidneys, it can permanently damage the organ and spread to the blood stream and cause a life-threatening infection.
- Bladder Infection – Also known as cystitis, a bladder infection is the inflammation of the bladder. A bladder infection can be painful and without treatment can spread to the kidneys. The infection can be caused by a reaction to drugs, radiation therapy, long-term catheter use or some feminine hygiene products.
