Health and Safety Education: Mobile Services

The Mobile Health and Safety Education Program is an outreach effort of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in partnership with The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. These educational classes are available at no cost throughout Hillsborough County to those who may not otherwise have access to these valuable services. To request educational classes or programs at your site please submit the request form on this page. Mandatory requirements must be met in order to process the request.

Requirements To Request Services
Your agency must:

  • Identify the need for this class prior to submission
  • Host the class in Hillsborough County
  • Meet the minimum number of pre-registered participants to hold the class
    • Minimum requirements are listed in the descriptions below
  • Not have other funding to support this service
  • Request this class a minimum of 45 days in advance

Please understand that special conditions may apply based on the type of class requested. Services are subject to change based on availability and funding.

Child and Youth Classes

Health

Germaine the Germ Thing™ (30-minute class) for preschool aged children that teaches the importance of properly washing your hands. This is an interactive program with a story time and children will see their “pretend germs” wash away with an interactive glow light activity. Minimum of 15 children per class with a 2-class minimum.

I Can Eat a Rainbow (30-minute class) for preschool aged children that teaches the importance of eating all the colors of fruits and vegetables in a Rainbow activity. Children will enjoy a story about a hungry caterpillar and then will be able to pick a fruit or vegetable and place it on the rainbow board. Minimum of 15 children per class with a 2-class minimum.

St. Joe’s Kid’s Power Club (12-week session, 60- 90 minutes each) for elementary age children and their caregivers to introduce them to the importance of nutrition and physical activity. Minimum of 20 children pre-registered.

Let’s Talk: Puberty is a 2-hour class for Boys or Girls, ages 9-13, (taught separately) about the emotional and physical changes during puberty. Topics can be customized based on needs of requesting agency.

Let’s Talk: Life Choices is a two-day class for boys and girls, ages 12-16, about making positive life choices as well as learning about puberty, reproduction, conception, sexually transmitted infections, and the realities of parenthood. Teens will take home a “Real Care” Baby Simulator between class days.

Safety

Walk and Roll Safety Class (90-minute class) for elementary age children that teaches the importance of how to be safe when walking and biking in their neighborhood. Bike helmet fit and distribution provided. Minimum of 15 children pre-registered.

Safe@Home™ (90-minute class) for children ages 9-11 that teaches safe habits when home alone such as calling for help, handling power failures, weather emergencies, basic First Aid and to assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. Minimum of 12 children pre-registered.

Safe Sitter™ (8-hour training) for youth ages 11-14 that teaches how to perform CPR, administer basic first aid, rescue a choking infant and child, handle behavior problems and run their own babysitting business. Maximum of 12 youth pre-registered. (Minimum of 10 to hold class)

Adult Classes

Safety

Car Seat distribution and education (3-hour class) for caregivers of children up to booster seat age (12 years old). Hands-on Instruction provided by our Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. Installation assistance is provided in caregiver’s personal vehicle. Caregiver will receive a seat based on their child’s age, weight and height. Child must be present. Limit of 8 car seats provided.

Combined CPR/First Aid Certification course (7-hour course) participants will learn how to perform CPR and choking rescue on infants, children, and adults, and handle emergencies such as bleeding, shock, poisoning, head and spine injuries. Maximum of 12 adults pre-registered. (Minimum of 10 to hold class)

CPR-only Certification course (4-hour course) Participants will learn how to perform CPR and choking rescue on infants, children, and adults. Maximum of 12 adults pre-registered. (Minimum of 10 to hold class)

Safe and Secure Baby (6-hour class) for expectant parents that includes education on CPR, car seat distribution and installation assistance in the vehicle, babyproofing the home, safe sleep, and coping with crying education. Maximum of 12 adults pre-registered. (Minimum of 10 to hold class). Limit of 12 car seats.

Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention (90-minute class)
This educational program designed for families, teens, childcare staff and educators covers the causes of and ways to prevent shaken baby syndrome, the dangers and consequences of shaking a young child, coping strategies for caregivers, and victim/offender profiles and statistics.
