Why Choose Us

Our internal medicine residency program at Morton Plant North Bay Hospital aims to graduate well-rounded internal medicine physicians who can demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary to enter independent practice. Our inpatient and outpatient curricula encourage residents to engage in active learning to maximize retention and clinical application. We’ve created a dynamic, adaptive program that remains at the forefront of medical training excellence.

Unique to our program, we utilize POCUS (point-of-care ultrasound) training that combines real-patient cases with hands-on practice to deliver a comprehensive and flexible learning experience in ultrasound education.

There are ten resident positions per year and BayCare has many post-residency career opportunities available, and we want you to continue practicing in the Tampa Bay area, whether it is after residency or coming back after fellowship.

Curriculum

The Program has implemented a 4+1 rotation schedule to ensure that sufficient duration is achieved for residents to develop meaningful relationships with faculty members, enabling comprehensive assessment and receiving feedback. A 4-week inpatient or outpatient rotation is followed by one week in continuity clinic.

During their weeks in these rotations, residents work with a consistent small cohort of attending physicians who provide close precepting and guidance on patient care treatment and planning, offering formative feedback and summative quarterly feedback. This long-term experience allows attending physicians to supervise residents as they mature in medical knowledge and clinical expertise.

All residents will receive experience in the following disciplines:

  • Addiction Medicine
  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Hematology/Oncology

Didactic Curriculum

  • Noon Report

Noon Report is held daily except for Thursdays. The meeting focuses on the growth of clinical reasoning skills by utilizing case-based presentations that facilitate discussion among residents and invited faculty. Also, special presentations take place at the end of each academic block such as journal club, morbidity & mortality, grand rounds, and doctor’s dilemma (ACP Jeopardy style).
  • Academic Half Day

The academic half-day (AHD) is a protected time on Thursday afternoon. Residents engage in active learning with reading material provided one week before the meeting. It is an alternative to the noon conference curriculum and involves a dedicated, weekly, 3-to-4-hour teaching period that can replace the traditional daily 1-hour sessions. We included important topics that are necessary to become a well-rounded physician.

Academic Half Day has been designed to include:

    • IM Board Review
    • Journal Club
