Curriculum

Each year consists of twelve, month-long block rotations. Residents have varying schedules, with each providing an excellent foundation in general surgery and subspecialty care. The goal of the General Surgery Residency is to provide residents with graduated responsibilities in the primary components of General Surgery. In addition, it will give them appropriate experience in subspecialties required.

Academic Half Day

The academic half-day (AHD) is an alternative to the noon conference curriculum and involves a dedicated, weekly, 4-to-5-hour teaching period that can replace the traditional daily 1-hour noon sessions. We will follow the SCORE curriculum, which is a nationally accepted program.

Program Faculty

Subhasis Misra, MD

Program Director

Dr. Subhasis Misra is the founding program director for the general surgery residency program at St. Joseph’s Hospital and will lead the training of future surgeons.

Dr. Misra was inducted into the inaugural class of the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators and is a recognized expert in the field of medical education. Throughout his career, he’s worked with medical students, residents, fellows, physician assistants, and nursing students. He currently holds faculty appointments in Surgery at Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine, and in Medical Education at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine.

Dr. Misra received the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award to India, where he was a visiting professor at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh campus. His project and focus there was “Changing Medical Education by Implementing Novel Educational Administration and Pedagogical Approach.”

In 2017, Dr. Misra founded a general surgery residency program in Brandon, Florida. Before this, he was an associate professor, in the Division of Surgical Oncology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine (TTUHSC) in Amarillo and El Paso, Texas. He has a tremendous passion for education and research, resulting in multiple faculty awards including the teacher of the year, and was the principal investigator of the $1.45 million colorectal cancer screening grant from CPRIT, while a faculty at TTUHSC Amarillo.

Dr. Misra’s clinical, educational, and research interests are in cancer surgery, health policy and advocacy for cancer care in the community, population health, and innovation in medical education.

Dr. Misra brings significant expertise in providing comprehensive cancer care. In his clinical practice with BayCare Medical Group Dr. Misra performs the full breadth of cancer surgery, including advanced surgery for breast cancer including those involving oncoplastic reconstruction and nipple-sparing mastectomies, melanoma, and other skin cancers, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal tumors, sarcomas, cancers of the liver, pancreas, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, lymph node surgeries and port placements.

Dr. Misra earned his medical degree at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, India, and did his general surgery internship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. Following his internship, Dr. Misra completed his general surgery residency at Fairview Hospital Cleveland Clinic Health System in Cleveland, Ohio, where he served as the chief resident. He added to his clinical expertise by completing a surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. Given his interest in leadership and administration, Dr. Misra also earned a master’s degree in health systems management from Rush University in Chicago, Illinois.
