About St. Joseph's Hospital

Train at one of Florida’s designated teaching hospitals—St. Joseph's Hospital is a 615-bed level II trauma center renowned for advanced medical technologies and outstanding patient care across more than 70 campus-based specialties. For anesthesiology residents, that means nearly 16,000 surgical cases annually spanning cardiac, vascular, neurological and complex general surgery—all under one roof. Our Centers of Excellence in Heart and Vascular, Neuroscience and Robotic Surgery put residents at the center of high-acuity, subspecialty-rich anesthesia practice from day one, building the technical range and clinical confidence that define a well-trained anesthesiologist.

Residents also rotate through other BayCare facilities for focused subspecialty training:

  • St. Joseph's Hospital South: A 223-bed hospital with 10,000+ annual surgical cases, offering high-volume general anesthesia that complements complex training at the main campus.
  • St. Joseph's Women's Hospital: A dedicated women’s hospital with 4,500+ births annually and a level IV NICU, delivering exceptional depth in obstetric anesthesia.
  • St. Joseph's Children's Hospital: A 219-bed regional leader in pediatric heart and cancer care with 5,000+ annual surgical cases, providing robust pediatric anesthesia training.

Curriculum

Our three-year curriculum is organized into 13 four-week block rotations per academic year, providing a structured and progressive path from foundational to advanced anesthesiology practice. CA-1 residents build core clinical skills across general anesthesia, airway management, regional anesthesia, vascular, ambulatory, pre-operative and critical care rotations. CA-2 residents advance into full subspecialty immersion—cardiac, neurological, obstetric, pediatric and pain medicine. CA-3 residents refine advanced specialty skills with integrated research and elective experiences tailored to fellowship and career goals, graduating as confident, board-ready anesthesiologists.

Academic Half Day has been designed to include:

    • ABA Board Review (BASIC and Advanced)
    • Grand Rounds
    • Morbidity and Mortality
    • Journal Club
    • POCUS Curriculum
