Curriculum

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Morton Plant North Bay Hospital has implemented a 4+1 rotation schedule to ensure that rotations offer sufficient duration for residents to develop meaningful relationships with faculty members, enabling comprehensive assessment and feedback. During the 4+1 rotation schedule, residents complete a 4-week inpatient or outpatient rotation followed by one week in continuity clinic. This cycle is repeated throughout the three program years. During the 4-week rotations, attending physicians provide residents with frequent, just-in-time verbal feedback, and end-of-rotation evaluations.

On the general medicine wards service, residents complete ten 4-week blocks across all program years, rotating with the same small group of attending physicians for one week at a time. This repeated exposure allows for close collaboration with physicians who can effectively monitor residents' progress over the course of the program.

Similarly, during their weeks in continuity clinic, residents work with a consistent small cohort of attending physicians throughout the entire program. The continuity clinic attending physicians provide close precepting and guidance on patient care treatment and planning, offering formative feedback throughout the week and summative feedback on a quarterly basis. This long-term experience allows attending physicians to supervise residents as they mature in medical knowledge and clinical expertise.

All residents must have experiences in the following during residency:

  • Cardiology Infectious Disease
  • Endocrinology Geriatric Medicine
  • Gastroenterology Neurology
  • Hematology/Oncology Addiction Medicine
  • Nephrology Hospice & Palliative care
