Medical Student Electives
The Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of South Florida/Morton Plant Mease welcomes medical students from AAMC accredited medical schools to do elective rotations with us. Each year we host students from across the country who wish to gain training experience in family medicine and various specialty areas within family medicine. We offer an exceptional student rotation experience at a strong university affiliated, community-based family medicine residency program located on the sunny gulf coast of Florida.
The University of South Florida/Morton Plant Mease Family Residency is an eight-resident-per-year program first accredited in 1997. Our faculty includes family physicians, OB/GYNs, a pharmacologist, and a clinical psychologist. Our outpatient home is the Turley Family Health Center (TFHC), and our hospital is Morton Plant. It also hosts a sports medicine fellowship.
Turley Family Health Center (TFHC)
The TFHC is our state-of-the-art, community-based outpatient center. It is equipped with electronic medical records, computers in each of the 36 exam rooms, a wireless network, seven procedure rooms, a lecture hall, a library, a conference room, and on-site laboratory and imaging services.
Morton Plant Hospital
Our two inpatient services operate out of Morton Plant, a 697-bed hospital located in view of the harbor in downtown Clearwater. One service is a traditional medicine service with group rounds conducted by a pulmonology/critical care attending. The patients are pooled from local primary care physicians who choose to use us as their hospitalists. The second service is made up of one senior resident and one family medicine attending, and the patients are our continuity patients from the TFHC. This is a more relaxed service, which encourages one-on-one learning opportunities among faculty members, residents and medical students.
- To provide experience in evaluating the most common medical conditions presenting to a family medicine center
- To integrate students into the hospital teaching service and allow them to manage their own patients under the supervision of a resident
- To strengthen history-taking and physical exam skills
- To foster the development of medical decision making skills
