Urodynamics Center and Urological Services in Tampa, Florida

Located on the first floor of St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital’s, the Urodynamics Center specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of bladder or urinary tract dysfunction. For your comfort and privacy, we have an all-female staff specially trained and qualified in this area. In this outpatient program, the neurological muscle function of the patient's bladder is tested with the aid of a computer. No X-rays are used.

A physician referral is required for the procedure, which takes approximately less than two hours to complete. No special preparation or food restrictions are required, but patients must come to the lab with a full bladder. Because patients must be awake and alert for the procedure, anesthesia is not given.

Studies are done to measure the volume and pressure of the bladder to determine the cause of the problem. Evaluations are done for a variety of medical conditions, including:

  • Incontinence
  • Stress or urge incontinence
  • Voiding dysfunctions

A complete urodynamic evaluation usually consists of the following three tests:

  • Uroflowmetry Rate - measures the force of the urine stream as you urinate and whether you can empty your bladder completely.
  • Cystometrogram/Electromyogram – measures activity in your pelvic muscles when you urinate.
  • Urethral Pressure Profile – measures the pressure inside the urethra (the duct that carries urine from your bladder to outside your body).

Follow up to your visit may involve some conservative treatments such as pelvic floor muscle re-training and other non-invasive therapies. Ask your physician about a referral to a BayCare Pelvic Health and Wellness specialist or one of our rehabilitation centers.
