Hospice Care

Hospice is a special concept of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families. Hospice staff and volunteers offer a specialized knowledge of medical care, including pain management. The goal of hospice care is to improve the quality of life by offering comfort and dignity.

Hospice care is primarily provided in the home, where patients have the loving support of their family and friends. However, most hospice providers define "home" as any place that the patient chooses to reside.

Many hospice providers offer the following services: 

• 24-hour on-call nursing
• Home health aides
• Patient care education and training for caregivers
• 24-hour on-call counseling
• Trained volunteer support
• Spiritual support during illness
• Respite services for caregivers
• Bereavement and spiritual counseling for loved ones for up to a year after the patient's death
• Specialized programs for children
• Professional caregivers for patients with a fragile caregiver, or no caregiver at all
