Second Opinion for Pediatric Cancer

We know that receiving a cancer diagnosis for your child is an overwhelming experience. The Bayless Cancer Institute is here to support your whole family. We offer second opinions on pediatric cancer diagnoses for children of all ages, including infants, adolescents, and young adults.

What is the purpose of a second opinion clinic?

Our second opinion clinic provides rapid consultation for serious illness in a child. We also offer consults with parents who have questions regarding their child’s initial diagnosis that they don’t feel have been fully answered elsewhere.

Second opinions can help you make a more informed decision about your child’s care so you can be certain your child is receiving the best possible treatment available. Whether you wish to validate the current treatment that your child is receiving or maybe your child’s cancer hasn’t responded well to initial treatment or has even returned after treatment, our team is dedicated to finding the best option for you.

Why should you get a second opinion?

Patients and families should consider a second opinion at any point if they feel their questions have not been fully answered by the initial treating institution. Many families seek a second opinion to validate the treatments offered by their current care team. Once your child has been diagnosed, a second opinion can help to clear up any doubts you may have or provide you with the confirmation you need to move forward with treatment.

How Do I Initiate a Consult?

You can initiate a consult by contacting our hematology-oncology clinic at (813) 321-6820.

Consults may be conducted via telemedicine for certain diagnoses.  Medical conditions where a physical exam is vital would require an in-person consult.

What Should I Bring to the Consult?

For any second opinion consult, we require all previous medical records on your child’s diagnosis, which may include pathology results, imaging results, and laboratory results along with any physician notes from the initial institution. Make sure to confirm the exact documentation you’ll need to bring when you call to make your appointment.
