What families need to know
Starting with the 2026-27 school year, a Florida mandate under the Second Chance Act requires an electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) screening for all first-time high school athletes in grades 9-12. This screening must be performed before students can compete in school athletics. Returning athletes aren't required to have a screening but are encouraged to do so.
Why an EKG Is Important for Youth Athletes
Sudden cardiac arrest is the top cause of death in young athletes, often occurring without warning. Rare but severe heart issues may be missed early on, but some can be found with an EKG screening.
