Your AFib Diagnosis

You have been diagnosed with an abnormal heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation (AFib). This means that the top part of the heart is beating very rapidly and irregularly, causing the heart not to pump blood properly.

The erratic, and many times rapid heartbeat can cause many symptoms such as chest pain, lightheadedness, or shortness of breath. Other people may have no symptoms at all. AFib is serious because it affects the heart’s ability to fill with blood as it should. Blood clots may form. This increases the risk for stroke. Untreated, it can also lead to heart failure. AFib can be controlled. With treatment, most people lead normal lives.

Based on your emergency room visit, it’s recommended you should see a cardiologist in 3 – 5 days for follow up.

* If your ED visit occurred Thursday – Saturday, tell the representative you need a follow up appointment with a cardiologist within 3 - 5 days of your visit. For example, if you were discharged from the ED on Thursday, you need an appointment no later than Tuesday. This will help ensure you are seen within the recommended time frame following your ED visit.
