Gestational Diabetes

A pregnant woman is holding her baby bump.Pregnant women can develop diabetes temporarily, and it is usually discovered around the 24th week of the pregnancy. This gestational diabetes is normally treated with a special diet so as to avoid the risk of birth defects and maintain optimal blood glucose levels.

You are at a greater risk of developing gestational diabetes during your pregnancy if you are:

  • African American, Hispanic/Latino American or American Indian
  • Obese
  • Family history of diabetes
