Gestational Diabetes
Pregnant women can develop diabetes temporarily, and it is usually discovered around the 24th week of the pregnancy. This gestational diabetes is normally treated with a special diet so as to avoid the risk of birth defects and maintain optimal blood glucose levels.
You are at a greater risk of developing gestational diabetes during your pregnancy if you are:
- African American, Hispanic/Latino American or American Indian
- Obese
- Family history of diabetes
BayCare has a pre and post-delivery program for women with gestational diabetes, which includes classes or individual appointments.
