St. Joseph's Hospital-South Celebrates 10th Anniversary on Feb. 2

St. Joseph’s Hospital-South will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Feb. 2, 2025, marking tremendous growth and expansion to serve the burgeoning communities of south Hillsborough and northern Manatee counties. 

St. Joseph’s Hospital-South opened as a 90-bed facility in 2015. Today, the hospital operates as a 223-bed facility, more than doubling its licensed bed capacity in less than a decade.

The hospital’s expansion in its 10-year history includes:

  • Constructing a five-story patient tower to accommodate services
  • Expanding the emergency department by adding 25-beds bringing the total ER beds to 55
  • Developing new surgical operating rooms
  • Creating additional space for rehabilitation and respiratory therapy
  • Building a 12-bed pediatric inpatient floor
  • Establishing an 11-bed NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
  • Adding labor and delivery rooms and maternity assessment/triage rooms

Most recently, St. Joseph’s Hospital-South added a 20-bed observation unit. The unit, which opened the week of January 26, provides specialized care for short-stay patients requiring 24-to-48-hour monitoring by medical staff. This unit specializes in the rapid treatment and care of patients with minor complications so they can quickly and safely be discharged and return home.  

Currently, an expansion to the hospital's pre-op and PACU (post-anesthesia care unit) is expected to open the week of February 2. The pre-op and PACU expansion will increase the number of beds there from 19 to 30.

St. Joseph’s Hospital-South provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical services in more than 20 specialties including bariatrics/weight management, breast health, cancer, gastroenterology, heart and vascular, interventional radiology, maternity, orthopedics, surgery and urology. The hospital features all-private inpatient rooms. 

Some recent highlights and accolades for the Riverview hospital include:

  • St. Joseph’s Hospital-South is rated 4-stars in the latest Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Quality Star Ratings Report. The star rating system allows people to find and compare information about the quality of care at more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals across the country. The highest rating in the CMS report is 5 stars and St. Joseph’s Hospital-South is among only 40% of hospitals nationally to earn a 4 or 5-star rating. 
  • St. Joseph’s Hospital-South is accredited as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). The SRC is a leading national, independent, external evaluator of programs and services for surgeons and hospitals.   • The hospital received 2024 American Heart Association “Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus and Target: StrokeSM Elite Honor Roll quality achievement awards for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines.
