Dr. Christina Canody Named Florida Hospital Association Caregiver of the Year
BayCare Health System proudly announces that Dr. Christina Canody, MD, FAAP, has been named the Florida Hospital Association (FHA) Caregiver of the Year. Dr. Canody, a distinguished pediatrician at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa and the medical director of pediatrics for BayCare, was recognized for her exceptional dedication to pediatric care and her transformative impact on children’s mental health services across West Central Florida.
"The Caregiver of the Year Award honors an individual who provides outstanding patient-care services and exemplifies a commitment to quality patient care," said Mary Mayhew, president and CEO of the Florida Hospital Association.
A Leader in Pediatric and Mental Health Care
Dr. Canody is described as a compassionate, innovative and community-focused physician. As a pediatrician at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital and the medical director of pediatrics for BayCare Health System, she is renowned for her comprehensive approach to pediatric care, addressing the physical and mental health care needs of her young patients. She was the driving force behind bringing the On Our Sleeves Movement for Children’s Mental Health to BayCare and West Central Florida. This national initiative aims to break the stigma around children’s mental health, provide essential resources and encourage open conversations about mental wellness.
Renowned for her clinical excellence and holistic approach to pediatric medicine, Dr. Canody has been instrumental in integrating mental health evaluation into all pediatric visits across BayCare’s health system. Her visionary leadership has ensured that mental health screenings are a standard part of pediatric care, facilitating early detection, intervention and support for children and families.
Empowering Pediatric Providers
Dr. Canody’s work focuses on initiating critical mental health conversations early, both with children and among providers. Understanding that pediatric providers do not traditionally receive mental health education, she launched the annual Behavioral Health Conference for Pediatric Providers in 2018. This initiative has provided vital training, equipping pediatricians with the knowledge and tools to diagnose, implement treatment plans and refer children experiencing mental health challenges.
Expanding Access to Care
A champion for community outreach, Dr. Canody has spearheaded numerous initiatives to educate parents, caregivers and teachers on early detection of mental health concerns and effective communication strategies. Under her leadership, the On Our Sleeves campaign has reached thousands of children and families, offering guidance and support through educational workshops and public awareness efforts.
In addition to her leadership in mental health advocacy, Dr. Canody serves as medical director for the BayCare Mobile Medical Clinic, which delivers free medical care and behavioral health services to underserved children in the region. She has also played a key role in the expansion of BayCare’s graduate medical education programs, including the establishment of a pediatric residency program that integrates behavioral health training. Her efforts have been vital in securing both internal medicine and family medicine programs, supporting BayCare’s goal of training 650 medical residents by 2029 to address Florida’s growing health care needs. Her vital role in developing a pediatric residency program within BayCare will ensure residents become extraordinary pediatricians.
Advocating for Systemic Change
Beyond the clinical setting, Dr. Canody is a vocal advocate for policy changes aimed at improving children's mental health services. Her work with local and state officials has helped secure funding and resources to expand access to mental health care for children in the region. Her advocacy has led to tangible improvements in both the quality and availability of pediatric mental health services.
Dr. Canody’s profound impact is reflected in the countless testimonials from families who have benefited from her compassionate care. Parents praise her empathetic approach, unwavering support, and dedication to ensuring every child receives the highest quality of care.

BayCare Health System celebrates Dr. Canody’s well-deserved recognition as the FHA Caregiver of the Year. Her extraordinary contributions to pediatric health, innovative approach to mental health integration and tireless advocacy continue to set new standards for excellence in health care. Her work not only transforms individual lives but also shapes the future of pediatric medicine and mental health care in Florida and beyond.
