For five decades, St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital has served as the birthplace for hundreds of thousands of Tampa Bay residents.

The hospital, originally known as Women’s Memorial Hospital and later Humana Women's Hospital, first opened its doors in the fall of 1974 and was the only dedicated women’s hospital in the Southeast at the time.

In 1993, the hospital became a part of the St. Joseph's family. Since then, St. Joseph's Women's Hospital has become one of the busiest maternity hospitals in the state and a leader in gynecological, breast and oncology services.

To help commemorate this golden milestone, the hospital hosted a free event for the community on Saturday, Nov. 9. The celebration included fun activities, entertainment, refreshments and a sweet birthday treat.

St. Joseph's Women's Hospital President Sarah Naumowich opened the event with a welcome from the stage, followed by testimonies from three obstetric and gynecologic physicians and retired Fox 13 news anchor Kelly Ring.

It was a family fun day featuring face painting, balloon twist art, photo stations, games, giveaways, chair massages and more. There were team members and providers on hand with tables to share information with the community members in attendance. Medical equipment, including an incubator and the BayCare Kids pediatric transport ambulance, were also on display. Guests were served healthy bowls, quiche and smoothies along with 50th birthday cupcakes.

Hundreds of community members attended, including retired team members and generations of families born at the hospital.
