The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration and connection, but it can also bring stress and overwhelm. Between shopping, gatherings, and year-end deadlines, it’s easy to put your own needs on the back burner. Taking just a few minutes each day to prioritize self-care can make all the difference, helping you stay grounded and truly enjoy the season. “Self-care isn’t indulgent—it’s essential for managing stress and maintaining your mental health, especially during the holidays,” said Lisa Moser, director of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Behavioral Health Clinical Services for BayCare.

Here are 12 practical and effective self-care tips to keep you grounded and energized throughout the holidays:

Day 1: Gratitude

Reflect and journal at least three things for which you are grateful. Savor the good moments, big or small.

Day 2: Connection

Reach out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Genuine connections are essential for well-being.

Day 3: Create a Moment of Joy

Do something that brings you joy in the moment, like taking a bubble bath, listening to your favorite song or reading a good book.

Day 4: Healthy Eating

Eat at least one healthy meal today. Nourishing your body and mind will help you feel energized and balanced.

Day 5: Movement

Increase your physical activity—take a walk, try yoga, or stretch throughout the day. Movement fuels both the body and mind.

Day 6: Boundaries

Give yourself permission to say no or decline last-minute “asks” or invitations. Protect your energy and peace.

Day 7: Simplify

Take something off your plate that you don’t have to do or find a shortcut to make a task easier.

Day 8: Laughter

Watch silly videos, a comedy show, or spend time with someone who makes you laugh. Laughter really is the best medicine!

Day 9: Nature

Connect with the outdoors. Take a walk, go for a hike, have a picnic, or simply enjoy the fresh air at a local park.

Day 10: Cognitive Clean-Up

Focus on your thoughts. Let go of negative thinking and replace it with healthy, rational thoughts.

Day 11: Sleep

Make a strong effort to get at least eight hours of sleep. Quality rest boosts memory, performance, and mood.

Day 12: Kindness

Perform a small act of kindness. Whether for a stranger or a loved one, kindness benefits both the giver and the receiver.

By prioritizing yourself for just a few minutes each day, you can reduce stress, improve your mood, and truly enjoy the holiday season. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish—it’s necessary to maintain a healthy balance. “When you prioritize your well-being, you’re better equipped to spread joy and kindness to others,” added Moser. Taking care of yourself allows you to better care for the people you love.
