CLEARWATER, Fla., (Nov. 6, 2019) – John Schmittner, MD, who is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation, has joined BayCare Medical Group. He is seeing patients at offices in Tampa. 

After graduating with a degree in psychology from the University of Chicago, Dr. Schmittner earned his Doctor of Medicine from Temple University School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore. Then, he completed fellowships in advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation at Aurora St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee; cardiovascular disease at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, and clinical research at the National Institutes of Health in Baltimore.

Dr. Schmittner believes in partnering with his patients to approach advanced heart failure in a comprehensive manner that focuses on the patient’s individual needs and beliefs. His clinical interests include mechanical circulatory support, pulmonary hypertension and cardiomyopathies.

An accomplished author and researcher, Dr. Schmittner has contributed numerous articles to peer-reviewed publications such as the American Journal of Cardiology, Journal of General Internal Medicine and Annals of Internal Medicine.
