Several BayCare Hospitals Named in Prestigious 100 Top Hospitals Study

Study Spotlights Best-Performing Hospitals in the U.S.
CLEARWATER, Fla., (March 5, 2019) — Several BayCare hospitals have been named to the IBM Watson Health™ 100 Top Hospitals® annual study. Mease Countryside Hospital, Safety Harbor; Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater and St. Joseph’s Hospitals, Tampa were selected as best–performing hospitals in the U.S. The study is based on a balanced scorecard using publicly available data for clinical, operational, and patient satisfaction metrics.
St. Joseph’s Hospitals were also recognized as the only hospital in Florida – and one of just 15 in the nation – to earn the 100 Top Everest Award for greatest improvement over five consecutive years.
“To be named to the 100 Top Hospitals List is a rare honor and privilege and to have three of our hospitals recognized in this manner is a true distinction,” said Tommy Inzina, president/chief executive officer of BayCare Health System. “This achievement is a testimony to the singular focus of our physicians and team members who work together toward the shared goal of clinical excellence and extraordinary patient experience,” said Inzina.
Mease Countryside Hospital has been named to the 100 Top Hospitals list 11 times; Morton Plant Hospital has been named seven times and St. Joseph’s Hospitals have been named three times. In Florida, Mease Countryside is the only hospital to have received 100 Top Hospitals 11 times.
The winning hospitals were announced in the March 4th edition of Modern Healthcare magazine.
The IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals winners outperformed peer group hospitals within all 10 clinical and operational performance benchmarks evaluated in the study: risk-adjusted inpatient mortality index, risk-adjusted complications index, mean healthcare-associated infection index, mean 30-day risk-adjusted mortality rate, mean 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rate, severity-adjusted length of stay, mean emergency department throughput, case mix- and wage-adjusted inpatient expense per discharge, adjusted operating profit margin, and HCAHPS score.
To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, IBM Watson Health researchers evaluated 3,156 short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals. All research was based on the following public data sets: Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply for awards, and winners do not pay to market this honor. The study has been conducted annually since 1993.
