South Florida Baptist Hospital Offers Maternity Classes

PLANT CITY, Fla., Oct. 26, 2018 — Have you ever been in South Florida Baptist Hospital and heard “Brahm’s Lullaby” playing over the intercom? That calming tune indicates that a mother has just given birth at the hospital. In fact, last year that melody was played 520 times -- in other words, 520 babies were born at the Plant City hospital.

As a service to the hundreds of women who choose South Florida Baptist Hospital for their childbirth experience, the hospital has begun offering maternity classes for expectant mothers. Different topics are covered each Thursday evening:

  • Healthy Pregnancy
  • This class covers recommendations for a healthy pregnancy and will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. the first Thursday of every month. Topics include:

    • Highlights of each trimester
    • Proper nutrition
    • Decrease risks
    • Safety concerns
    • Warning signs and when to contact your health care provider
    •  

      Participants may bring one guest to classes. Please bring a notepad to take notes. Snacks will be provided.

  • Birth Experience
  • This class covers various aspects of labor and delivery, such as labor signs, breathing techniques, pain control options and hospital policies. This class is held from 6 – 8 p.m. the second Thursday of every month. Topics include:

    • Early labor and home management
    • Signs and symptoms of labor
    • Pain control
    • Stages of labor
    • Baby skin-to-skin
    •  

      Participants may bring one guest to classes. Please bring a notepad to take notes. Snacks will be provided.

  • Breastfeeding and Newborn care
  • This class covers several aspects of newborn care, such as breastfeeding, bathing, diapering and safety risks. This class is held from 6 – 8 p.m. the fourth Thursday of every month. Topics include:

    • Breastfeeding basics
    • Positioning
    • Handling a crying baby
    • Swaddling, diapering and bathing
    • Shaken baby syndrome
    •  

      Participants may bring one guest to classes. Please bring a notepad to take notes. Snacks will be provided.

  • Hospital Stay and Postpartum
  • This class covers hospital policies regarding hospital stay, emotional changes and adjusting to the new parent role. Topics include:

    • Visitation
    • Safety concerns
    • Discharge process
    • Postpartum blues
    • Adjusting to being a new mommy
    • Follow up
    •  

      Participants may bring one guest to classes. Please bring a notepad to take notes. Snacks will be provided. This class is held from 6 – 8 p.m. the third Thursday of every month.
