St. Anthony’s Hospital Hosts Free Diabetes Prevention Fair

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., (Oct. 24, 2017) – About 30 million people in the United States have diabetes and of those, seven million of them are undiagnosed, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health. To help educate the community on diabetes, St. Anthony’s Hospital is hosting a free community Diabetes Prevention Fair. The event, which is part of Diabetes Prevention Month, will be Wednesday, November 15, 2017, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the hospital’s auditorium, 1200 Seventh Ave. N., St. Petersburg.

Megan Minor, a physician assistant with Florida Endocrinology and Diabetes Center, will be the featured speaker at 9 a.m. During the diabetes prevention fair, the community can receive free health screenings including blood glucose and blood pressure, A1C and cholesterol. Fasting is suggested for the blood glucose and cholesterol screenings. Clinicians will be on hand to review results with participants.

Information will be available on many St. Anthony’s services including the LifeHelp Nutrition and Diabetes Center; Sleep Disorders Center; wound care; the new Publix Pharmacy in the Suncoast Medical Clinic; and fitness and wellness programs.

There also will be a cooking demonstration that will emphasize the importance of a healthy diet to prevent diabetes.
St. Anthony’s Hospital has been recognized by the Joint Commission as being certified in Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Care. For outpatient care, the St. Anthony’s LifeHelp Nutrition and Diabetes Center offers a variety of nutrition and lifestyle education services.
