St. Anthony’s Hospital Offers Free Screenings at 2016 World Diabetes Day Fair

October 18, 2016
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Oct. 18, 2016) – St. Anthony’s Hospital is offering free diabetes risk assessments and screenings during the hospital’s World Diabetes Day Fair from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016, at St. Anthony’s Park, which is on the corner of Ninth Avenue N and 12th Street, St. Petersburg.

St. Anthony’s is celebrating 85 years of providing compassionate, quality care to the community and is taking the opportunity on World Diabetes Day to share information and spread awareness on the disease.

In addition to the risk assessments, St. Anthony’s team of health professionals also will offer blood glucose and A1c screenings, cholesterol screenings, blood pressure checks, foot screenings and body mass index screenings. Participants are not required to fast. However, if a more accurate report of blood glucose levels is sought, fasting after midnight is advised. Clinicians will be on hand to review results with participants.

Participants also can take advantage of free massages, a virtual grocery demonstration and exercise demonstrations. BayCare Health Care Navigators will be on hand to help residents with Affordable Care Act enrollment and there will be an Ask-a-Pharmacist table where participants can discuss their medications. Healthy snacks will be provided. In case of rain, the event will be held in the hospital’s main lobby.

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, more than 29-million Americans suffer with diabetes – about nine percent of the U.S. population. Of those people, more than eight million do not know that they have the disease. Diabetes can put patients at greater risk for other health concerns such as heart disease and stroke, according to the National Institutes of Health.

St. Anthony’s Hospital has been recognized by the Joint Commission as being certified in Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Care. For outpatient care, the St. Anthony’s LifeHelp Nutrition and Diabetes Center offers a variety of nutrition and lifestyle education services.

Registration, which is suggested but not required, can be done online at BayCareEvents.org. Parking is available at event site.
