December 12, 2016

TAMPA, Fla. (Dec. 12, 2016) – Dr. Arabella Stock, medical director of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, served as a top abstract presenter and was awarded first prize for best scientific presentation during the 12th Annual International Meeting of the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society (PCICS) Dec. 8-11, 2016.

PCICS is an international professional forum for promoting excellence in pediatric cardiac critical care medicine. More than 500 cardiovascular experts from around the world attended the multidisciplinary, interactive conference in Miami, FL, which included cutting-edge research presentations and panel discussions.

During her presentation titled “A Value Based Model of Care Results in Short Length of Stay and Low Readmission Following Congenital Cardiac Surgery,” Dr. Stock discussed the use of an innovative, value-based model of care for children undergoing cardiac surgery at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital known as EXPRESS.

“Results of the 18-month study involving 242 patients indicate that a focus on high quality can lead to a remarkably short hospital recovery following pediatric cardiac surgery,” said Dr. Stock. “In fact, the length of stay in this study is the shortest ever reported.”

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital’s Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Dr. Stephen Langley, who also attended the PCISC conference, adds “the results of the study have wide-spread positive implications for patients, institutions, payers and health care expenditure in general. It resets the standard for other programs to aspire to.”
