BayCare Seminar Offers Help for Interacting With Adults in Crisis
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (June 29, 2015) – According to the National Institutes of Health, about one in four Americans will develop a mental illness in their lifetime. Crises don’t always happen at facilities that are equipped for such emergencies. BayCare Behavioral Health wants to help by offering a day-long seminar to provide training and tips for dealing with adults in crisis.
Mental Health First Aid for Adults will be from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 at the St. Anthony’s Outpatient Center (Carillon), Conference Room A, 900 Carillon Parkway, St. Petersburg.
“The seminar is geared toward those in health care and those lay professionals who do not have specialized experience in the mental health field, like human resource directors, faith community leaders and the community at large,’’ said Gail Ryder, vice president of BayCare Behavioral Services. “These people may find themselves dealing with an adult who needs help for a mental illness but may not have the expertise to know what to do.’’
Participants will learn how to assist those who are experiencing depression, anxiety and mood disorders; trauma; substance abuse disorders; and psychosis. There will be role-playing to help participants apply skills in real-life situations such as panic attacks; suicidal thoughts and behaviors; overdose or withdrawal from alcohol or drug use; and reaction to a traumatic event.
The fee for the all-day seminar is $80. For health care professionals, there are continuing education credits available. Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, occupational therapists, mental health therapists and behavioral health therapists are eligible for six CEUs.
Light snacks and beverages will be available throughout the day.
Class size is limited. To register, please visit BayCare.org/Events. For more information, please call toll-free 1-866-894-7411.
