St. Joseph’s Hospital Sleep Disorders Center in Tampa Receives National Accreditation

April 01, 2014

Tampa, Fla., (April 1, 2014)- After five years of evaluation, St. Joseph’s Hospital Sleep Disorders Center in Tampa recently received accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

In order to receive accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional healthcare as designated by AASM for five straight years. The AASM looks at:

  • facility and equipment
  • policies and procedures
  • data acquisition
  • patient care
  • quality assurance

The sleep center must also have clearly stated goals that include plans to have a positive impact on medical care in the community it serves.

“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates St. Joseph’s Hospital Sleep Disorders Center on meeting the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Dr. M. Safwan Badr, AASM president. “St. Joseph’s Hospital Sleep Disorders Center is an important resource to the local medical community and will provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality of care for patients suffering from sleeping disorders.”

“We are proud to offer this high standard of safe, professional care to our patients and consistent, excellent service to our physicians as validated by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine,” said Charles Stroup, Manger of the Sleep Disorders Center.

St. Joseph’s Sleep Disorders Center opened in 1990 and provides care to approximately 800 patients a year from infants to adults. Sleep disorders are complex and often difficult to diagnose because there are a variety of sleep and other medical disorders with similar symptoms. St. Joseph’s Hospital Sleep Disorders Center laboratories are equipped with the most advanced diagnostic sleep testing available. Overnight studies take place in comfortable, private patient rooms that are closely monitored by polysomnographic technologists. After being assessed, a detailed sleep evaluation is sent to your doctor with a treatment recommendation plan.

AASM is the only professional society dedicated to the medical subspecialty of sleep medicine. It sets the standards and promotes excellence in healthcare, research and education.  There are more than 2,500 AASM accredited sleep centers across the country.
