St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital works with Tampa Bay’s finest gynecological surgeons on both an outpatient and inpatient basis. Many of the procedures are performed in our 10 surgical suites dedicated to women's care.
Some common gynecological surgical procedures include:
- Hysterectomy - total abdominal, vaginal, radical, laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy
- Total abdominal - removal of the uterus and cervix through an abdominal incision
- Vaginal - removal of the uterus and cervix through an incision at the top of the vagina
- Radical - removal of the uterus, cervix, upper vagina, and adjacent pelvic lymph nodes
- Laparoscopy, diagnostic and operative (minimally invasive) - the insertion of a lighted telescope into a small incision near the navel to look inside the abdomen
- Hysteroscopy, diagnostic and operative (minimally invasive) - the insertion of a lighted telescope into the cervix to look inside the uterus
- Bladder suspensions by various surgical methods - this includes restoring the bladder to its origin position in the pelvis for appropriate bladder function and incontinence correction
- Colporrhaphy - repair of the bladder bulge (anterior) and rectal bulge (posterior) in the vaginal wall
- Cervical Biopsy - the removal of a piece of the cervix for pathology examination
- Dilatation and Curettage - the cervix is dilated the uterus is gently scraped to remove tissue
- Endometrial Ablations by various methods - the removal of the uterine lining to reduce abnormal bleeding
- Exploratory Laparotomy - the exploration of the abdomen through a surgical incision
- Fistula repairs - Recto-vaginal fistula is the repair of a small opening between the rectum and vagina; Vesicovaginal fistula is the repair of a small opening between the bladder and vagina
- Marsupialization of Bartholin Cyst - the surgical removal of a cyst that appears on the perineum
- Myomectomy - the removal of uterine fibroids
- Oophorectomy - the removal of one ovary or both ovaries
- Condyloma removal- the removal of a wart-like growth on the vaginal tissue
- Salpingectomy - the removal of a fallopian tube
