Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
At St. Joseph’s Hospital, our surgeons are known for their success with minimally invasive spine surgery, a procedure performed with a smaller incision than traditional “open” surgery.
We perform a range of minimally invasive surgeries, for all appropriate spine conditions.
Benefits of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
While our traditional surgeries also use the latest, proven advances and are still the most appropriate choice for many patients, the minimally invasive approach offers several advantages. These benefits come from the smaller incision and can include:
- Less bleeding during surgery
- Less trauma to muscles and other spinal structures during surgery
- Less pain after anesthesia wears off
- Shorter hospital stays
- Faster recovery
- Ability for older patients and others to have surgery
Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery: Am I a Candidate?
We treat a range of conditions with minimally invasive surgery, including:
- Herniated disc
- Stenosis
- Scoliosis
- Fractures
- Cancer
Your spine surgeon will discuss with you whether minimally invasive surgery is right for you, your condition and your health needs.
Our minimally invasive surgeries include:
- Spine Cancer Surgery
- Spinal Fusion
- Decompression Surgery
Minimally Invasive Kyphoplasty
Kyphoplasty is one of our minimally invasive procedures, used to treat spinal fractures — specifically a type of fracture called a compression fracture. During a kyphoplasty, your surgeon will:
- Use real-time X-ray imaging to make a small incision and guide a narrow tube to the damaged area
- Insert a tiny balloon through the tube and slowly inflate it, restoring the fractured vertebra to its original spot and creating extra space inside the bone
- Remove the balloon and inject special cement into the vertebral space to stabilize the bone
In addition to stabilizing the bone and restoring vertebral height, kyphoplasty is designed to relieve pain.
