What happens during an evaluation?

This is an opportunity for you to meet the speech/language pathologist that will be treating you and share your communication and/or swallowing concerns. A treatment plan is developed based on clinical testing results and patient reports. This initial meeting lasts 60-90 minutes.

What paperwork do I need to complete for the evaluation?

Patients are asked to arrive 15 minutes early to their evaluation appointment to complete necessary paperwork, including insurance verification, patient identification and consent to treatment. A printable copy of the adult case history form (Spanish version) is available if you'd like to get a head start on the paperwork. 

You are advised to bring in other relevant paperwork such as previous therapy evaluation reports and swallow function study results, as this will be useful information for the speech pathologist treating you.

Is a family member allowed to sit in on the evaluation and therapy?

If the patient gives permission and the speech/language pathologist considers it beneficial to treatment, family members can observe therapy.

How is therapy scheduled?

Treatment is usually scheduled for 45 minute sessions 1-2 times per week. Duration of treatment can range from a few weeks to several months depending on the severity of the impairment and the patient's progress. Goal progression is regularly updated.

Is therapy covered by insurance?

Insurance coverage varies by provider. Please check with your insurance company to verify coverage of speech therapy.
