Interventional radiology supports the most cutting-edge therapies offered at Morton Plant Hospital. Interventional procedures are minimally invasive, non-surgical techniques performed by a physician to diagnose or treat diseases. Many conditions that once required surgery can now be treated using interventional radiology techniques, resulting in smaller incisions, less infection risk, less pain and shorter recovery times.

Our interventional radiologists are physicians who specialize in minimally invasive treatments performed using imaging guidance, such as x-ray, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT and MRI. Our skilled team  is board-certified, fellowship trained and perform the following interventional radiology procedures:

Gastrointestinal

  • Biliary catheter and stenting interventions to treat blockages or narrowing of bile ducts or treat an inflamed or infected gallbladder
  • Ureteral stenting and nephrostomy intervention to clear obstructions due to conditions such as kidney stones, tumors, infection, or blood clots
  • Paracentesis/thoracentesis for drainage of fluids from abdominal or chest cavity

Neurology

  • Catheter angiography to identify abnormalities, such as a small aneurysm or arteriovenous malformation inside the brain
  • Endovascular embolization coiling to treat intracranial aneurysms and  control or prevent abnormal bleeding in the brain
  • Endovascular embolization to treat arteriovenous fistula (AVF)  and arteriovenous malformation (AVM)
  • Catheter-directed thrombolysis to dissolve abnormal blood clots or improve blood flow
  • Lumbar puncture (or spinal tap) to identify infection, bleeding, cancers or inflammatory conditions of the brain or nervous system
  • Carotid artery stenting is used to improve the flow of blood to the brain and help prevent stroke

Oncology

  • Chemoembolization to treat cancer (predominantly the liver)
  • Cryoablation freezes and destroys diseased tissue, including cancer cells in lung or kidney
  • Microwave ablation uses the heat producing power of microwave energy to destroy cancerous tumors in lung and liver
  • Image-guided needle biopsies to remove and diagnose suspicious masses/lesions within the body

Vascular

  • Angioplasty, thrombosis and vascular stenting  to improve blood flow in the body’s arteries and veins
  • CT and MR angiography is used to examine blood vessels in key areas of the body
  • Vascular access procedures provide an effective method of drawing blood or delivering medications and nutrients into a patient's bloodstream over a period of weeks, months or even years
  • Dialysis access provides an effective way for treatment when acute renal failure is a diagnosis or when awaiting for dialysis fistula to mature
  • Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is used to treat complications of portal hypertension
  • Uterine fibroid embolization treats systematic fibroid tumors in the uterus
