Thoracic Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (TEVAR)

Thoracic Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (TEVAR), also known as endovascular stent grafting, is a minimally invasive treatment for patients with the following conditions:

• Thoracic aortic aneurysm
• Aortic dissection
• Aortic ulcers

With TEVAR, small incisions are made in the artery and a stent-graft (a fabric tube supported by metal wire stents) is placed near the aneurysm and opened inside the aorta. Surgery is performed inside the patient’s aorta and does not require the chest or abdomen to be opened as with open surgical aneurysm repair. Studies show TEVAR patients have almost 80 percent fewer complications than patients treated with open surgical aneurysm repair.

Before, During and After TEVAR:

• Aortic disease patients should seek prompt treatment since aneurysms can enlarge and rupture
• Patients may need to complete pre-surgery tests and stop certain medications prior to surgery
• Surgery usually lasts one to two hours
• Patients may require a hospital stay of one to two days
• Recovery can take several weeks
• Patients may not be able to drive or lift heavy objects for a short time following surgery
• Your surgeon will provide a personalized recovery plan for you
