Gynecological Cancer Care

Patients diagnosed with gynecological cancer, including ovarian and uterine tumors, are treated by an expert team of oncologists, radiologists and surgeons at Morton Plant Hospital. We utilize the most advanced technology available while also providing compassionate care tailored to the individual needs of each woman. In addition to chemotherapy (combination, regional and systemic), Morton Plant Hospital also offers a comprehensive range of minimally invasive and traditional open surgeries.

Gynecological Surgery

While there are many treatment options and therapies for gynecological cancer, including radiation therapy, hormone therapy and/or chemotherapy, surgery may be required, either alone or in conjunction with non-surgical treatments. For patients requiring gynecological surgery, Morton Plant Hospital works with some of Tampa Bay’s finest gynecological surgeons on both an outpatient and inpatient basis.

Outpatient chemotherapy is available at Axelrod Pavilion, a state-of-the-art infusion center where patients can receive combination, regional or systemic chemotherapy to help treat gynecological tumors. In addition, brachytherapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy (EBRT), and external beam radiation therapy such as the Trilogy Linear Accelerator are available at Lykes Radiation Pavilion.

Gynecological Unit

Women who have undergone gynecological surgery receive expert postoperative care in a special inpatient unit of Morton Plant Hospital dedicated solely to women. Here, highly trained and knowledgeable nurses understand the unique nature of gynecological surgery and recovery. They provide the complex level of care required by gynecological cancer surgery patients while offering each woman the respect, understanding and compassion she deserves.

Robotic Surgery

Gynecological surgery can often be performed using a minimally invasive approach. Robotic surgery is an alternative to traditional surgery and offers many benefits to patients including less pain, a faster recovery, shorter hospital stay, less risk of infection and smaller scar. Surgeons also benefit from robotic surgery by gaining a high-resolution visual field, enhanced dexterity and better access to surgical sites.

The physicians at the Gynecological Cancer Program at Morton Plant Hospital pioneered the area's use of robotic-assisted technology in the surgical treatment of gynecological cancer. In fact, Florida's first robotic-assisted surgery to treat endometrial cancer was performed at Morton Plant Hospital.
