Rehabilitation
Our rehabilitation experts assess each patient and design an individualized program to meet our patients’ needs and capabilities. The programs help both patients and family members reach the goal of a safe return home or to proceed to the next level of care. Our supportive and encouraging team of doctors, nurses and therapists work together to help patients achieve their highest level of independent functioning. We offer several rehab programs including:
- Physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Speech therapy
- Pulmonary, cardiac and neurological rehabilitation
- Holistic care
- Nutrition management
Speech Therapy Programs: Our team of Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) understands that being able to communicate and swallow for nutritional intake are essential to a patient’s recovery and quality of life. Our SLPs work to restore communication, cognition and swallowing using a variety of assessment and treatment modalities. Oral care is prioritized and the SLP team educates all staff on the importance of meticulous oral hygiene in reducing infection risk.
BayCare Alliant’s SLPs also treat aphasia, dysarthria, tracheostomy and voice disorders and are uniquely qualified to train patients on the use of the electrolarynx following total laryngectomy. Verbal communication is often restored in patients with a tracheostomy tube via use of the Passy Muir Speaking Valve.
Cardiac Care: Cardiac rehabilitation and prevention includes exercise programs to improve cardiovascular health and education to reduce risk factors. Geared toward the cardiovascular patient, this rehabilitation program incorporates nutrition counseling and stress management strategies.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation: This program promotes independence by focusing on muscle strength and endurance, education on energy conservation techniques and increasing activity tolerance.
Neurological Rehabilitation: Our team of doctors, nurses and therapists are trained in neurological assessment and treatment techniques to facilitate the recovery of patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and progressive neurological diseases.
Holistic Care Program: Healing and therapeutic touch, chakra alignment, mindfulness techniques, reiki, energy healing, guided imagery, and yoga are offered to patients on a volunteer basis at no additional cost and have proven highly effective in reducing anxiety related to weaning and with pain management.
BayCare Alliant’s team also offers additional therapies such as pain management, wound care, fall prevention and cognitive assessment and intervention.
Based upon the patient’s ability to participate, therapy services may occur in the patient’s room or in our newly renovated rehabilitation gym. With doctor clearance, patients may participate in outdoor rehabilitation activities prior to discharge.
Specialty Rehabilitation Programs at BayCare Alliant
Early Mobilization: As part of the daily clinical routine, this rehab-driven program promotes early mobility with a multidisciplinary focus and the goal of maintaining or improving patients’ functional levels.
Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Retraining: Occupational therapists, in collaboration with nurses and patient care technicians, provide simulated ADL and Independent Living Skills (ILS) programs. These allow patients to practice home-like tasks while in the hospital setting and help determine discharge planning to the least restrictive environment.
Turning and Repositioning Program: Immobility is a significant risk factor affecting both the development and healing of pressure ulcers. The turning and repositioning program follows guidelines designed to reduce or relieve pressure on at-risk areas, maintain muscle mass and general tissue integrity and ensure adequate blood supply. Rehabilitation, nursing, dietary and respiratory therapists collaborate to ensure every patient at BayCare Alliant participates in this program and is consistently repositioned in accordance with the established therapeutic guidelines.
Benefits of these programs include:
- Decreased use or elimination of sedatives
- Improved mood and overall feeling of dignity
- Improved patient, family and caregiver satisfaction
- Improved skin integrity
- Improved bowel function
- Improved respiratory function
- Individualized patient plan of care
