Diabetes Education
BayCare Diabetes Education offers an array of online and in-person services to help people with diabetes improve their health. Our team of diabetes educators can help you develop a customized plan to reach your health goals no matter where you are in your journey with diabetes.
Services include:
- Comprehensive diabetes self-management education (DSME) classes
- Annual diabetes education and training support
- Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) with a registered dietitian
- Gestational diabetes and diabetes in pregnancy self-management counseling
- Diabetes medication instruction (device training and drug administration)
- Glucose meter instruction
- Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) training
- Insulin pump support
- Diabetes in children (comprehensive services offered at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa and St. Joseph’s Children’s Specialty Center in Safety Harbor)
Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists
Our team of diabetes educators include Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCESs), registered nurses and registered dietitians who have specialized training in many areas of diabetes, including:
- Type 1 diabetes
- Type 2 diabetes
- Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA)
- Gestational diabetes
- Diabetes in pregnancy
- Diabetes in children
CDCESs are certified through the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education and are held to very high standards. Your CDCES team will teach you about:
- Meal planning
- Blood glucose monitoring
- Medications
- Reducing risks of complications
- Problem solving
- Healthy coping
- Being active
Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs
BayCare’s diabetes self-management education and support programs are accredited/recognized by the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES) or the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
With a provider referral, many insurance carriers, including Medicare, offer covered services. Check with your insurance plans for more information about any out-of-pocket costs, such as copays, coinsurance and deductibles. If you don’t have insurance or your plan does not cover outpatient diabetes education, contact us to see if special assistance may be available to you.
Diabetes and prediabetes education and support are offered throughout BayCare and services vary by location, day of the week and time of day. Some locations may also support online appointments only.
