Typically, when you think of an ultrasound, your first instinct may be to associate it with pregnancy, but there is actually much more to an ultrasound. Ultrasounds serve as multifaceted imaging tools that are beneficial when diagnosing many different areas of the body for a multitude of conditions.
An ultrasound is an imaging tool that uses high-frequency soundwaves to generate images of internal organs and other areas of your body. During the procedure, a gel and transducer is used to transmit the soundwaves. The soundwaves transmit from the transducer through the gel and then they ricochet back through the transducer, which are used to create the image you see on the technologist’s computer screen.
In addition to internal organs, ultrasounds can show your blood vessels and their blood flow. All of this information is important when diagnosing and treating many potential conditions. Ultrasounds have many other benefits, including that the procedure is painless, provides real time images, is noninvasive and does not use ionizing radiation.
Preparations depend on the type of ultrasound procedure you are undergoing. In some instances you may be asked to remove your jewelry and other metal objects. Others may call for you to wear a gown. Some may call for you to not eat or drink for an extended period prior to your appointment or may call for you to drink a large amount of water prior to your appointment. The team at BayCare will provide you detailed instructions on how to prepare for your particular exam.
